The Mashantucket Pequot are a federally recognized Native American nation in the state of Connecticut. They are descended from the Pequot people, one of the Algonquian families of languages. Within their Reservation in Ledyard, New London County, Connecticut, the Mashantucket Pequot operates Foxwoods Resort Casino. It is one of the world’s largest resort casino in terms of gambling space and number of slot machines, and one of the most economically successful. They are one of two federally recognized tribes in Connecticut; the other is the Mohegan Indian Tribe. Both have developed large and successful casino resorts on their reservations.
The Mashantucket Gaming Industry
The Mashantucket casino and gaming industry is a thriving and growing market. Since 1992, the Mashantucket Pequot have operated what has developed as one of the largest resort casinos in the world. The Connecticut Center for Economic Analysis, a research center at the University of Connecticut, analyzed the casino’s effects on the Connecticut economy. Their report stated that the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and its Foxwoods casino have had a positive economic impact on the neighboring Town of Ledyard and the state of Connecticut, which receives a portion of gaming proceeds.
Foxwoods Resort Casino at Mashantucket
As mentioned above, there is only one casino in Mashantucket: the Foxwoods Resort Casino. Before the project got started and came to fruition, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe which operates Foxwoods had to sue the state to allow the casino to open. They argued that since the state legally permitted “Las Vegas Nights,” where low-stakes casino games were operated to benefit charities, then the tribe should be entitled to do the same. Eventually, they won their case before the U.S. Supreme Court and began construction of their casino which was financed by a Malaysian conglomerate.
There are no other casinos in Mashantucket, aside from Foxwoods Resort Casino. However, the Mashantucket Pequot struck a deal with MGM Resorts, and together, they envisioned and completed a project to expand the casino resort. It was dubbed as MGM Grand at Foxwoods, but when MGM Resorts split with the Tribe, the expansion building came to be called as Fox Tower up to now.
